Greetings all!
If you love all things garlic, then you have to visit Gilroy, California, which is the self-proclaimed “Garlic Capital of the World”.
This coming weekend (July
25-27), 9,000 garlic lovers will enjoy all sorts of garlicky food – including
garlic ice cream! - refreshing drinks, live music and entertainment, culinary
competitions, and arts and crafts.
The festival started in 1979, and as I am writing this post, the tickets for the 2025 festival have been sold out.
If you are going or went in the past, I want to hear from you! How did you like the garlic ice cream? It sounds strange, but apparently it is a fan favorite!
If
you cannot make it to the festival but are curious about the ice cream and have an ice cream machine at home, here is
the Gilroy-festival inspired recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 vanilla bean, split in half, seeds scraped out and reserved
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 8 large egg yolks
- Put the milk and garlic, along with the vanilla pod and seeds, in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat and remove immediately.
- In a medium bowl, whisk the cream, sugar, and egg yolks until combined. Place a strainer on top of the bowl and, whisking constantly, slowly strain the hot milk mixture into the cream, sugar, and egg mixture.
- Return the mixture to the pan and stir continuously over low heat until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, about 10 to 12 minutes. Do not boil.
- Pour the mixture into a bowl and chill over an ice bath. After the mixture chills, pour it into an ice cream machine and churn until done. Freeze the confection until you're ready to serve.
What did you think? Drop
me a line!
P.S. I really liked the garlic hats!

I remember trying garlic ice cream at a restaurant years back, but it was not garlicky enough so maybe this recipe would bring out somewhat of the garlic flavor that I love so much
ReplyDeleteLast time I went through Gilroy, I could smell the garlic before the town limits ! I think will skip the garlic ice cream and enjoy the strawberry festival in Ventura !
