CALM: September-2020 Calendar

Greetings all!

Here is the September-2020 calendar from CALM: lots of wonderful suggestions and ideas for self-reflection and self-care. I love the September 20 reminder!

Take a moment to think what makes you present, patient, and resilient. And remember to breathe!

September 1 - When you need to make a decision, take a break from thinking and sit in meditation to let the answer arise naturally.

September 2- Welcome whatever emotions are coming up for you, let go of resistance and notice what’s possible when you accept what arises.

September 3 - Slow down and bring full awareness to the pleasure of whatever you find yourself doing, whether folding a t-shirt or watching a sunset.

September 4 - When you notice yourself critiquing yourself, pause, take a deep breath and say to yourself, what if I didn’t judge myself right now?

September 5 - Instead of trying to force things you can’t change, focus on what you can shift and influence.

September 6 - Let thoughts pass like clouds floating by in the big blue sky. Notice how working with this analogy makes you feel.

September 7 - Instead of seeing a past mistake as a blunder, recognize it as a step along your journey. Let it be a source of wisdom and growth.

September 8 - “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” Reflect on an unexpected teacher in your life.

September 9 - What needs tending in your life? Invest 15 minutes of your time and attention to something that you’ve been neglecting.

September 10 - Write a list of what’s important to you and put it on your fridge. Write from your heart.

September 11 - Each time you turn to your breath, you are creating a more peaceful environment for your thoughts and emotions.

September 12 - As you move through the world, practice beginners-mind by approaching life with wonder, innocence, and curiosity.

September 13 - Give yourself space to feel, time to breathe, and become your own source of soothing comfort.

September 14 - Make room for your emotions without judgment. Allow them to pass through you, evolve into something else, or just dissolve.

September 15 - Remember that you’re not just your mind. Walk through the world connected to your body and heart and honor them in your choices today.

September 16 - Make time for silence today. Think of it as a gift to your mind.

September 17 - Do your meditation somewhere out of the ordinary today. Maybe outside or on the bus! Notice how you meet new distractions.

September 18 - Be. Here. Now. Say this to yourself at least 10 times today.

September 19 - “There is no need for a different, better moment.” Meet each moment fully and work with what you have available to you at this time.

September 20 - Your heart is beating. Your body is breathing. You are here. Receive today as a gift.

September 21 - Look for the humanity within yourself and others. Let there be love.

September 22 - Reflect on something that you’d like to let go of and use your exhales to support your process.

September 23 - Talk about your shame with someone you trust. Shame can’t survive when it is met with empathy and understanding.

September 24 - Find a quiet place and hang out in the spaces in between your thoughts.

September 25 - When negativity arises, practice gratitude to shift your perspective.

September 26 - Surrender to change as a way to find your flow.

September 27 - When you notice yourself being reactive, impatient, or aggressive, stop and ask yourself how you want to act. This is a moment of choice.

September 28 - Explore the details of a familiar space to see it anew. Share what you noticed with the hashtag #DailyCalm.

September 29 - “Obstacles do not block the path, they are the path.” What in your life seems like an obstacle but is actually helping you to grow?

September 30 - Do something to strengthen your resiliency.

10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites That Are Worth the Visit [hopefully soon!]

Greetings all!

For many of us, the world has shrunk to the size of our home, with the couch being one of the most popular “travel” destinations. For me, the popularity of my couch is rivaled only by the frequent visits to the fridge.

For the foreseeable future, I will not be planning any trips but I refuse to stop dreaming about the places I want to explore. So obligingly Internet comes to the rescue with the plethora of sites, pictures, and articles…

Here are some gorgeous pictures of the 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites that I saw on the SmartTours’ blog.

1. Machu Picchu

2. Galapagos Islands

3. Great Barrier Reef

4. Petra, Jordan

5. Torres del Paine, Chile

6. Old City of Dubrovnik, Croatia

7. Agra Fort

8. Red Square in Moscow

9. Venice, Italy

10. Mont St. Michel, France

See It Through [Poem of the week]

When you’re up against a trouble,
    Meet it squarely, face to face;
Lift your chin and set your shoulders,
    Plant your feet and take a brace.
When it’s vain to try to dodge it,
    Do the best that you can do;
You may fail, but you may conquer,
    See it through!

Black may be the clouds about you
    And your future may seem grim,
But don’t let your nerve desert you;
    Keep yourself in fighting trim.
If the worst is bound to happen,
    Spite of all that you can do,
Running from it will not save you,
    See it through!

Even hope may seem but futile,
    When with troubles you’re beset,
But remember you are facing
    Just what other men have met.
You may fail, but fall still fighting;
    Don’t give up, whate’er you do;
Eyes front, head high to the finish.
    See it through!

Tomato, Peach, and Burrata Salad

Greetings all!

Don’t you love summer? I enjoy visiting my local farmer’s market in the summer - the colors and smells always lift my mood. Even with social distancing, it is such a treat!

When in season, I buy heirloom tomatoes and ripe peaches to make this colorful summer salad. If you love caprese salad, you will love this easy 5-ingredient recipe.

Image and recipe idea from https://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/tomato-peach-burrata-salad/

Ingredients:

  • Tomato
  • Peach
  • Basil (fresh is best but dry basil will work in a pinch!)
  • Burrata cheese (or mozzarella cheese)
  • Balsamic reduction (or just a splash of olive oil and balsamic vinegar)

Instructions:

  • To make the balsamic reduction, pour the balsamic vinegar into a small saucepan. Heat over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer, swirling the pan occasionally, until reduced to about half of the original amount, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  • Cut the tomato and peach in chunks.
  • Top with burrata cheese and basil. Salt and pepper optional.
  • Drizzle the balsamic reduction over the salad and enjoy.

Bon Appetit! Let me know how you like it!

Lift Your Mood [Meditation Technique]

Practice this meditation to lift your mood.

Start by sitting in a comfortable position with your feet planted on the floor. Visualize a glowing light surrounding your body. Watch it grow bigger with every breath, as if your inhale were fanning its flames.

Rub your hands together for 10 seconds as you repeat several words to set an intention. For instance, try “patience” or “peace.”

Then raise your hands about five inches above your head. Inhale to draw in that positive energy as you lower your hands to the crown of your head. Exhale and raise your hands again. Repeat with each breath.

Feel the balance of having only your own energy and radiate that into the world.

~ April Unterberger (as read in the February-2020 issue of Real Simple magazine)

P.S. I also like using “balance” and “vitality” as my intention words. What are yours?
