How to Spot a Scam

Greetings all!

Scammers are becoming more and more creative. Make sure you stay vigilant and know how to spot a scam and how to protect yourself!

Popular scams are:

  • Imposters, mobile ransomware
  • Online romance, job offers
  • Grandparent
  • Pay yourself
  • Lottery winnings and bogus prizes
  • Investment opportunity
  • Tech support
  • Home closing
  • Online shopping
  • Utility shutoff

How to protect yourself:

  • Scammers often target the elderly and vulnerable.
  • Phishing is when scammers send emails that appear to be from reputable companies. Do not open links in emails or texts unless you’re sure of the sender. Hover over email or web addresses to check the actual source.
  • Never provide your usernames or passwords outside of the normal secure sites and apps you use.
  • Look for spelling errors, “off” colors, altered language.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Guard your personal information:  Fraudsters can spoof a phone number to make it look like the call or text is coming from a reputable company.  DO NOT offer information to someone who calls you directly.
  • Do not act immediately: Scammers may pressure you to pay them quickly and can have a demanding tone. Always verify who they are and think about what they are asking for.
  • Use caution when sending money: Scammers could tell you to pay in ways where you may not be able to get your money back, like money transfers, gift cards or using Zelle®. Always verify who the recipient is before sending money. Never send your financial or personal info by email.
  • The way you pay matters: Different payment methods offer different protections. Some debit and credit cards might offer fraud monitoring for unusual purchases.

Thought of the week – Inner Silence

Greetings all!

One of my New Year’s resolutions for 2023 is to find, hold on to, and enjoy the moments of complete silence – however brief! – with no distractions, no internal or external chatter, no devices, nothing in my hands or in my head.

Surprisingly, truly doing nothing is not easy to do! The brain is thinking of the next item on the to-do list, the hands are itching to open a new book, cook a meal, or check for new Internet articles…

But when I do pause and let go, the inner (almost) silence does feel wonderful!

Inner silence promotes clarity of mind;
It makes us value the inner world;
It trains us to go inside to
the source of peace and inspiration
when we are faced with
problems and challenges.
~ Deepak Chopra (http://www.deeshan.com)

Hope you have a great week and find some inner silence and peace! Drop me a line!

Puzzles! Puzzles! Puzzles!

Greetings all!

You might remember my post about WORDLE! Now it is a new year, and there are so many more new(ish) games to play.

Although recent studies show no conclusive evidence that puzzles improve brain functions over time, I think they are fun - and I always look forward to a little brain teaser! Here are some of my favorites:

WORDLE – Guess a five-letter word

NERDLE – An 8-tile numbers version of Wordle

MINI-NERDLE – A smaller 6-tile version of Nerdle: https://mini.nerdlegame.com/

BINERDLE – Guess 2 Nerdles in 7 tries

WORLDLE  Guess the country based on the map image

Other variations: https://worldle.online/

WAFFLE  Rearrange the letters into the correct words, horizontally and vertically, in 15 moves or less, with a minimum of 10 moves

DELUXE WAFFLE  A longer version, with 25 moves. To access, click Menu in the left top corner (3 horizontal lines)

QUORDLE – Wordle quadrupled: Solve four words in 9 tries!

Happy New Year!

“Happiness is simply the absence of desire… Happiness is not about the achievement of pleasure (which is joy or satisfaction), but about the lack of desire. It arrives when you have no urge to feel differently. Happiness is the state you enter when you no longer want to change your state.”
