The Vegreville Pysanka: One of The World’s Largest Easter Eggs

Greetings all!

If you celebrate Easter, here is an idea for what might be the easiest Easter-egg hunt. You really cannot miss this 31-foot (9-meters) tall pysanka, located in Canada (Vegreville, Alberta). Be careful walking underneath it, as it weighs 5000 lb (2.3 tons)!

A pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs.

The sculpture was designed to symbolize Vegreville’s rich Ukrainian culture and dedicated to the 1975 centennial of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It took Paul Maxum Sembaliuk and Ronald Resch over 12,000 hours to complete it.

According to the town of Vegreville’s website, “The Pysanka is a complicated jigsaw puzzle containing 524-star patterns, 2,208 equilateral triangles, 3,512 visible facets, 6,978 nuts and bolts, and 177 internal struts. The Pysanka is recognized around the world as not only a unique artistic masterpiece but also an achievement of nine mathematical, architectural and engineering firsts.”
